DAAD Project Funding

© DAAD/Laura Blecken

The DAAD promotes cooperation projects between German and international universities with various programs. Many of these can be used for joint research projects between German and Japanese universities.

In principle, only the German side (Higher Education Institutions in Germany) can apply for the DAAD project funding. Some programs, such as PPP Joint Research, are matched by a funding from a Japanese institution.

Program Summary
PPP Joint Research (project-related exchange of people), including Partnership programs with JSPS, the universities of Waseda, Tsukuba, Kyoto and NINS
Programm des Projektbezogenen Personenaustauschs (mit verschiedenen Ländern)
The program aims to initiate or strengthen binational research partnerships between German and foreign universities or research institutions, emphasizing the qualification of young academics. It supports the mobility and short-term stays of project participants, especially young researchers, for research activities in all disciplines.

Please note: There are 5 different PPP program types for Japan depending on the Japanese partner institution, as explained in the document “Anlage 1: Länderspezifische Bedingungen – Ausschreibung 06/24”

Please note: For applications from the Japanese side, see the websites of the respective Japanese partner organisations and universities (for JSPS, please visit this page)

The aim is to promote the mobility of students at German universities and to advance the internationalization strategies of the participating institutions. Study and internships of up to six months by students enrolled at German universities, language training and specialization courses, trips for training and competitions, as well as support for scholars and promotion of the program are supported.
